A mountain celebrates its anniversary

15 July 2015 marked the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper. The first ascent of this mountain is considered to represent the birth of alpinism and the start of tourism development in the Alps.

One of the key elements of the 2015 anniversary year was a focus on the Hörnlihütte as the actual gateway to the Matterhorn. For this reason, those responsible have decided to transfer the Hörnlihütte to a foundation, to modernise it comprehensively by the anniversary date and to adapt it to meet today's challenges. The other elements comprising the anniversary year can be found on the official website.
